Theodore Hobson Awarded Prestigious EPSRC Postdoctoral Fellowship in Tandem Photovoltaics
Theodore Hobson has been awarded an EPSRC Postdoctoral Fellowship for his project “Nanochemical spectroscopy for interface engineering in advanced tandem photovoltaics”, following a highly competitive selection process. We celebrated together recently. Warmest congratulations Theo!
The fellowship application was ranked highly by the assessment panel, which commended both the scientific quality of the proposal and Dr Hobson’s performance at interview. The award supports research aimed at advancing the understanding and engineering of interfaces in next-generation tandem photovoltaic technologies through nanochemical spectroscopy.
In its feedback, the panel highlighted Dr Hobson’s clear and compelling vision for the research programme, as well as his strong plans for delivering long-term impact through the fellowship scheme. Particular recognition was given to his effective use of an international mentoring network and his well-articulated ambition to establish an independent research group.
The panel also praised the proposal’s strong collaborative dimension, noting the breadth of industrial and academic partners involved. It encouraged continued expansion of collaborations beyond those associated with the host institution as a means of further strengthening research independence.
In addition, the panel valued Dr Hobson’s commitment to supporting early-career researchers and recommended that he explore PhD supervision during the fellowship period as a pathway to building a sustainable research group. His ambition to supervise doctoral researchers by the end of the fellowship was viewed positively.
The fellowship is expected to commence in 2026. This award marks an important milestone in Dr Hobson’s research career and reflects the growing importance of advanced interface engineering in the development of high-efficiency tandem photovoltaic technologies.
