Many congratulations to Dr Matthew Wright. Matthew has been awarded a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship to work on 'Developing Nanoscale Passivation Layers for Tandem Solar Cell Interfaces: Towards Terawatt-Scale Solar PV'.
The production of solar cells must be rapidly ramped-up in the coming years to reduce CO2 emissions and mitigate climate change. Tandem solar cells, where two cells are stacked together, have just broken the 30% efficiency barrier and are poised to take over the market.
The way these high efficiency cells are made, however, is not compatible with mass production. The aim of Matthew's Marie Curie Fellowship, therefore, is to redesign the silicon cell surface such that high efficiency tandem cells will be compatible with processing in an industrial environment. This will enable a low-cost, terawatt solar market in the future.
