Project: Passivating contacts for silicon solar cells

Shona completed her undergraduate course in Materials Science in Oxford, receiving a 2i. Her part II project was in the Applied Superconductivity group with Chris Grovenor and Susie Speller. She looked at manufacturing lead-free joints for NbTi wire using novel powder processing methods.
Shona's DPhil is focused on improving silicon metal contacts using thin dielectric layers. This structure results in contacts which are both passivating (low in defects) and carrier selective (reducing the minority carrier current). Outside of the group Shona has represented Scotland U21s in hockey and has blues in Hockey and cricket.
