Altermatt Lecture Series, Data Analysis Methods in PV, 2025

Summary: Maybe you will spend your entire career analysing your own experimental data or that of other researchers. Maybe you think of Gaussian statistics, error propagation, standard deviations, and least squares fitting as the go-to tools. After years of working in both academic and industrial R&D environments, I have experienced that these fundamentals of data analysis often lead researchers to incorrect or uncertain conclusions. My two lectures will therefore introduce you to robust data analysis, methods that can help you extract reliable insights from messy real-world data: from notched boxplots to robust data fitting (regression) and robust correlation analysis. For those who are not familiar with Python or R, I give out my three Excel spreadsheets to perform robust analyses in Excel. If you want to sharpen your data skills and avoid common pitfalls, this lecture is for you!

The Altermatt Lecture Series, 2021

This lectures shows both graphically and mathematically why the band diagram is often a complete set of parameters to describe semiconductor devices.
You will understand the necessary potentials and their reference points in such a way that you can spontaneously imagine them later in your career.
How does band bending occur? And how do the different potentials enter into the semiconductor equations?
